Meet Marc, a Spirit Foundation Alumnus who matriculated at SACS in 2013. Marc is currently a full-time student at the University of the Western Cape, completing his third year BCom Law degree. We asked Marc some questions and reflections about his journey with the Spirit Foundation.
Spirit Foundation: What were some of the highlights from your days as a Spirit Foundation Scholar? Marc: I would say the most memorable bits were camps. It was where I got to meet some of the most amazing people and where I created lifelong bonds. Many of my fellow Spirit Foundation Scholars whom I met through interaction on camps, I still call my friends today.
SF: What makes you a role model to your peers? Marc: The fact that I am a young person who comes from a community that is drug ridden and is run by gangs and have not allowed it to negatively affect my life, is probably what makes me a role model. I haven’t allowed the negativity to influence my dreams.
SF: What is your message of encouragement to the current Spirit Foundation Scholars? Marc: I would say enjoy your time being a scholar. Don’t wish your school days away. Live for the moment, enjoy it. Because one day you’ll wish to be back at school, definitely not for the school work (!!) but for the breaks that you get to spend with your friends. You’re going to miss getting to sit next to your best friend in class. Continuously work hard, but enjoy yourself as well.
SF: Your message of motivation to your fellow Spirit Foundation Alumni? Marc: We have successfully matriculated! For some it is as recent as a year ago, but for others it could be more than five years ago. At this point there aren’t any school teachers to push you to do your best, you have to push yourself. Set your own goals and monitor them. If you fail you’ll only have yourself to blame. Take charge of your life and do not let it pass you by. No one wants to wake up one day with regrets and a whole lot of “what if’s”. Never give up, keep pursuing your dreams. Everything seems impossible until someone succeeds and shows you that it’s possible.
SF: Anything else you would like to say? Marc: I like to say thank you to the Spirit Foundation for the opportunity they gave me. I would never be able to thank them enough. The fact that they believed in me even when I didn’t believe in myself. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
