‘Halala’ is the Xhosa word for ‘celebration’ and you say it to congratulate anyone on their success. So we say halala! to our wonderful group of 22 Spirit matrics (Grade 12’s) in 2019 as they finish their school years and step out into the big wide world. They have worked hard all year and actively used all the opportunities for extra tuition, study guides and workshops for skills and personal development that we have given them to make a success of their last year at high school. We attended their Valedictory services at their schools in early October and their final exams began on Wednesday 23 October. By Tuesday 26 November exams were complete, the stress was over and it was time to celebrate with a fabulous lunch at the Surf Shack in Camps Bay on Wednesday 27 November. It was a beautiful day at the beach and a time of happy memories, reminiscing about their 5 years as a Spirit scholar and discussing final plans for tertiary studies. Gifts were given, they were all inducted into the Spirit Alumni Society and they all signed the pledge to stay in touch with us and support the Spirit Education Foundation in some way in the future in honour of the opportunity they have been given. We are proud of the choices they have made for tertiary studies (education, IT, actuarial science, law, environmental science, sports psychology and audiology to name a few) and we wish them every blessing as they embark on this new chapter of their lives.
